Violent scenes have erupted on the small Greek island of Lesbos, where thousands of refugees have amassed, arriving from the border with Turkey. More than 1,720 migrants have landed there and on the four other Aegean islands over the past week, adding to the 38,000 already crammed into overstretched refugee centres.
Frustration exploded into violence last weekend with a spate of mob attacks on foreign aid volunteers and journalists accused of encouraging more refugees to land on Greek shores.
In recent days many aid groups have evacuated staff and suspended operations, citing the dangerous environment.
Correspondent Andrew Connelly met some of those migrants caught up in a desperate situation.
