Small African countries struggle to protect the coastal waters on which local communities depend – thousands of nautical miles go unpoliced. Last month environmental campaign Greenpeace wrapped up a series of joint surveillance missions with the coastguards of four countries: Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Their research has unearthed a Wild West in Africa’s oceans, where far from shore, industrial vessels are involved in illegal fishing activities, which take a toll not only on developing economies but on food security and vulnerable marine species. For the third and final part of his series, Kyle G Brown was aboard the Esperanza, a 71-metre ship that Greenpeace uses to track down and stop illegal fishers in west Africa. The vessel has sailed the east Atlantic for three months, researching illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Kyle G Brown investigates the situation off Kenya's coasts with the support of JournalismFund.EU.
